The Department of Spine Surgery runs multiple academic programs including FNB (Fellowship National Board) and Association of Spine Surgeons (ASSI) Spine Fellowship as 2-year structured courses with a very competitive Entry and Exit Examination. Currently the former is temporarily suspended but the ASSI fellowship is continuing with two candidates per year getting in.
The candidate for the long-term fellowship works in the capacity of a clinical registrar in the Department of Spine Surgery and is duty-bound to assist in the operating rooms, go round all admitted patients and see patients in the out patient’s clinic. He has specific targets so far as presentation and publications are concerned. Applications are usually invited/ advertised in April/ May and the selection is over by August. The selected candidate joins from 1st October for a period of 2 years. Following are the details:
The short-term fellowships include the AOSpine fellowship for 3 to 6 weeks and the APSS (Asia Pacific Spine Society) fellowship for a period of about 4 weeks. Our department has got accreditation from both these international spine societies. In addition to this, our department caters to a traveling fellowship of SSWB (Spine Society of West Bengal). This is a 6-week rotating fellowship in which the candidate spends 2 weeks in our department at Kothari Medical Center and 2 weeks at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital and a further 2 weeks at Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata (INK).
